The door to the basement slid open, expelling a cloud of smoke, and Xyryn dropped to a crouch. She looked around the edge of the door, only heard moanings, saw nothing but smoke. Using a child's trick, she slid down the stairs on her belly, rolled to a prone position against the far wall of the landing.
She could now see under the smoke still pouring out of the basement room that had been Chi'anna's. In the near dark, she saw movement. She focused on the motion, saw small hands clawing at the floor.
"Still alive," she thought.
She shoved against the wall behind, again sliding downstairs, carbine at the ready. She saw just a blackened body, weakly trying to crawl, no set of legs protruding downward from the smoke ceiling that was just now beginning to rise. Casting a glance into the room, she saw futon and chairs crumbling into ashes and embers. The smoke was now only coming from the still burning remains of the mounted bantha head.
Dropping the carbine, the Kiva began to examine the charred body. IsLeh came down the stairs. Chi'anna began to cough as Xyryn broke open the last tube of bacta that she had in her medkit and started smearing goo over the third degree burns that seemed to entirely cover the Rodian's body.
Isly listened to the coughing for a moment and then began to remove her helmet. She began doing something to the helmet. Orlad came cautiously down the stairs behind her. Xyryn thrust the bacta tube at one of them as she rose to her feet.
"I have to get more, I don't have enough," she explained as she ran up the stairs. She coughed as she ran down the foyer hall, vaguely noting the difference between explosive smell and whatever had fried Chi'anna. Xen'ya's house was closest, and Xyryn smiled grimly at the forethought that had prompted her to hide a miniature bacta tank there.

When she returned to the basement of her own house, Xyryn saw that Orlad had used up both the remains of the tube he had as well as the other one. Isleh was leaned over in an awkward position administering high oxygen content air from her armor to the burned Chi'anna.
They turned the crispy, and now lax, body over. Xyryn and Orlad began applying bacta to this side while Isleh continued to apply the needed air to Chi'anna. While Orlad finished slathering on the pink gel, the Kiva tapped into the Goddess' Gift and deep probed for damage to the lungs. She found none.
"We have to get her into a bacta tank," Xyryn stated. Isleh nodded and dashed up the stairs. Xyryn went into the destroyed room and checked the fountain; if it was intact, it could be used as a makeshift tank. No luck, they would have to move the patient some distance...but not to Rinna's clinic.
Isleh came back down the stairs with sheets and Wookiee spears. She and Orlad rigged a stretcher while Xyryn ran outside to ready her skiff. The three lifted the body onto the stretcher, carefully ascended the stairs, and hurried outside to the grounded skiff.
"Where do we take her?" asked Isleh.
Xyryn looked at Orlad. "To Orlad's little hideout." Orlad lifted his hands as if to protest, but dropped them again without saying anything. They drove past the crater that had been the cloning center, toward the abandoned hospital. _________________ "It is. Deal with it." |
