Spotlight #11: Kuri (Esharra)

I. The Basics

Real life first name:
Judy

GC Forum handle:
Kuri

Age and/or birthday:
June 27th and I am younger than Zyre and Bosco.

Where in the real life world do you live?
Austin, Texas

What type of work do you do?
I'm currently in a career change. I was a right brain person stuck in a left brain world. Now I'm going to do something more creative. I've been thinking it might be nice to make hats.

What other hobbies or activities do you take part in, other then playing MMO’s?
Playing classical guitar and pencil sketching.

How long have you played MMO’s?
8 years.

What is the main MMO you play?
SWG

Main Character name:
While Esharra has always been the character I consider my "main", most of you know me better as Kuri'au.

Secondary/other Character name(s):
Ninz and Sharrea

Guild:
Esharra is in VSD, Kuri is in Templ, Ninz and Sharrea are in NoctU.

How long is your typical gaming session?
It all depends on how much time is available to me.

What does a typical gaming day consist of for you?
There is no typical, now. With fewer responsibilities, I'm free to be totally random and I'm enjoying that. I rarely schedule anything. There is nothing in the game which I *don't* like doing but I'll admit I'm probably burned out on serious crafting for life. This week I'm doing a lot of decorating and pet grinding.

II. Your Main Character

What is your highest character level in your game of choice?
All of my characters are CL90.

How did you choose your main character's name?
Esharra is the name I've used in rp for a very long time. It was the name of the Temple of An, the ancient Sumero-Babylonian sky god. Heaven.

What race and profession is your main character?
Esharra is a Zabrak and her current job is Adjutant to the High Inquisitor. Her game mechanics profession/class changes frequently.

What do you like the most about the profession you have chosen for your main character?
I tend to always gravitate back to Entertainer on all of my characters. My approach to roleplaying my characters is pretty free from profession restrictions and Entertainer gives me the most options to play with.

What faction is your main character?
Esharra and Kuri are Imperial. Ninz is Rebel.

III. Most/Least Favorites in SWG

What is your favorite player-owned ship? Why?
Eta-2 Actis Interceptor (Jedi Starfighter). When I'm in my JSF, it is usually just leisure flying. That's the sort of no pressure, fly around and casually kill things, space activity which I prefer.

What is your favorite ground vehicle? Why?
My old Falumpaset, Plato. We've been through a lot together.

What is your favorite expansion? Why?
JTL. I had never done any of the space games and did not consider myself good at that sort of thing. Invictus insisted on teaching me how to fly and it opened up a new gaming world for me.

What is your favorite planet? Why?
Dathomir. It's challenging and I can always find something to do there. My favorite area of the game is Singing Mountain. And Dathomir is where Esh found Ninz' egg.

Who is your favorite NPC? Why?
Bertos Goodner. He is the ultimate street entertainer.

Which expansion do you like the least? Why?
ToOW. If they had to base an expansion on a planet seen in only a few scenes from one of the movies, I would have preferred Hoth. Weaseling HK-47 into Mustafar is its one saving grace.

Which planet do you like the least? Why?
Kashyyyk. The invisible walls frustrate me. I want to run cross-country and explore the planet but I cannot.

What was your favorite Star Wars movie? Why?
To be honest (& I know it is sacrilege), I have never been a big Star Wars fan. ANH was the only one I saw in the theater and it is the one I probably like best.

Who was your favorite character? Why?
Leah. She was portrayed as smart and independent; a leader and a smartass. I was at an age where that sort of role model was needed.

Who was your least favorite character? Why?
That's a toss up between Luke and Anakin. I want to lock them both in a room together and let them whine each other to death.

What are the most credits you have ever spent on purchasing a single item for one of your characters?
35 million credits for a piece of junk which Ninz could not live without.

Do you have an item you no longer use but keep around for nostalgic reasons? If so, what is it and why do you keep it?
A pair of red dress slippers. They are the ones Esharra was born wearing at launch.

Describe your favorite period of Star Wars: Galaxies (Pre-CU, CU, NGE, etc.) and what you liked the most about it.
The first three months of the game; before holocrons, before mind buffs. When we were still in awe of it all.

IV. Roleplay and MMO’s

What game brought you to Role Playing (RP)?
Dungeons and Dragons

Have you played tabletop RP games before moving to MMO’s? If so, which ones?
D&D, Call of Cthulu and a game created by a friend which we called The Castle.

What other MMO’s have you played?
Asheron's Call, AC2, UO, EQ, Horizons, AO, WoW, CoH/CoV and LotRO.

What do you get out of playing your MMO of choice?
I love playing in the versatile world of SWG. There are fewer limitations placed upon my creativity in this game. Koster's "big world" vision is why I came to SWG and why I have stayed around.

How did you get into Roleplaying?
On my grandmother's front porch, on rainy days, with sheets stretched between patio furniture.

How would you “sell” roleplaying to someone that has never tried it before? What are the benefits?
I don't think I would try to sell it to someone. I think it's just one of those things that you either get it or you don't.

What was your favorite event or story arc?
I think my all-time favorite rp was playing one of a pair of runaway marionettes in ad lib larp with a friend in school. That is where the Ninz personae got its start, based on my African Grey parrot's personality.

How long have you been an RP’er?
About 22 years.

What do you like best about RP’ing?
Roleplay gives me the freedom to explore aspects of myself which I would not consider in my lawful/good, day to day life.

What type of RP ‘role’ do you prefer portraying with your character?
I like roles which challenge me on a personal level. I like it when my characters have internal conflicts to overcome. Often I choose for my characters to make what I would consider "wrong decisions" so they will find themselves in positions where I can experience the story from that perspective.

What kind of RP story arc would you most like to be a part of?
I love anything with a lot of layers and complexity but with little GMing.

What would you like to see more of when doing RP?
More spontaneity and fewer expectations.

Which other community member do you like to RP with the most? Why?
Oh, there are so many. Deime has a knack for playing his character with a mix of humor and grace that makes him a lot of fun to play with. Nyvveck's integrity of character is just astounding, yet he often surprises me with an unexpected gesture or expression which expands how I see his character. KS and I compliment each other very well in roleplay. My characters are very comfortable with hers.

Do you have any ideas for future RP story arcs that you would share?
I don't like thinking of arcs as bits of story with beginnings and endings but as turns in our collective story..intersecting branches in our tree. I've a turn of events in mind but don't expect a prologue, introduction or any warning that it has started. The situational stuff will simple present itself and its development will depend on how others react to it.

Describe your best RP experience from playing Star Wars: Galaxies?
Early in the game on another server, I was part of a collective who instigated a roleplayed story which was played out over 5 months and incorporated gameable puzzles and quests. It was open to the whole server and I think our estimation that 200 players involved themselves in it, was conservative. The beautiful part of it was that we just laid the groundwork out with no pre-determined ending and let the players lead the way.

If you could give a new player one bit of advice based on your game experiences, what would it be?
Don't be afraid to play an ordinary person living in an extraordinary world.
