So...The chaystar wants to know if anyone is playing this game now that its hit live. I always thought it was a cool idea to have a pirate mmo, but it could also fail miserably if it is not done the right way I suppose. Right now I am really just looking for something that is fun and can take up my free time.

I'm playing-- have been for since pre-order started (and for over a year in beta ).
I think it's a fun MMO. And it sounds like they're going to be fleshing out the role playing aspect a lot more pretty soon. So all the better.
(FYI, I'm a Pirate on the Roberts server. I know, it's an EU server. But that's where the society I'm in decided to join.)
I've always got to show this off, ha ha. It's a page from the PotBS instruction booklet...
Guess who's name that is?

My guy plays. Has, since the beta opened. He enjoys the tactics of the sea warfare...and has read all of Horatio Hornblower, now, and has started a series written for adults.

I like the idea of the complexity in the games combat, but I can't make up my mind as to whether or not I could handle the slow pace.

The only way to find out if the slower pace is workable for you is to try it out. Since tactics are important, the slower pace might be useful. I don't think you can macro the fighting, too may variables.

Are the variables enough to keep my interest though... I am too cheap to buy it and test it if I can't have a certain level of expectation.

I don't think it's slow-paced at all. In fact, you'd be surprised at how furious battles can be at times. Sure, you're not going to launch fifty rounds of cannon fire a second, but when you get into a battle you're going to have cannon fire all around you, music blasting, characters roaring... it can be pretty intense.
Not to mention you've got the tactics you need to figure out, so there's not much time to sit there and go "wow, this is taking forever".
Than there's the swashbuckling/avatar combat too. Which is ever more fast-paced than the ship combat.
If it would help, though, I could put a quick video together to show off some of the combat.

WHat I have learned about MMO's is they are a big time investment, I played this one alot in Beta, but to be honest, I am gonna hold out for others before I sink the kinda time I did with SWG into anything else.
PotBS is a lot of fun, and if there is a trial, all should try, but I don't think personally, it would hold my interest long enough.

Ship combat is fun. The economy is probably the most robust of any I have seen. The swashbuckling sucks ass. I haven't played since live but I played up to the end of beta. Swashbuckling was boring and repetitive. Mash buttons for specials and hope your health lasts longer than the people you are fighting.

Ya, I agree, if they would have pulled off good swashbuckling it would have been appealing like SWG with the Jump to lightspeed add-on.

I've watched a bunch of youtube videos and such but i really never get that great of a look at what is going on other than cannon fire every 2 minutes or so.

I like the swashbuckling avatar combat.
Anywoo, comabt is a bit slower than your typical MMO, yes. Battles can last a few minutes, even a half hour or so depending on how many ships you're up against. Unlike most MMOs where a battle lasts no longer than ten seconds (*cough cough* SWG *cough cough*).
If you want a pure mayham, heads bursting, guns blasting every millisecond MMO, than no this isn't for you. PotBS is a lot more strategy-based. In this MMO the action doesn't come from blasting your enemy in the head seventy times in less than a second; the action comes from strategy and planning your moves and attacks.
There's also a lot more "enforced" role play than in most MMOs-- even more so than SWG. For example, your character will actually meet other characters that will fall in love with them, hate them, become their enemy, and what-not.
And FYI, cannons don't take two minutes to reload. Usually around 15-35 seconds, depending on your skill.

I might have to look into this game sometime. Pity there's not trial for it.
