GC 2007 Fantasy Football League

Well it's already that time again, I've set up a league, the information to join is

ID#172623
PW: starwars

The draft is set for July 27th at 12:00pm CST.

Good luck, and may the Force be with you.
BeachBrat

You're all going down! and this time I actually know the sport too!
Sai'nu

In tradition of the Carbineer's old Motto; I bet I can incap me before you can!

Well, after I get signed up. laughing
Tsarg

Im not gonna miss it this year and i expect to finish it!!!

Cheers!!!! smile

Edit to add: The Caracas Bucanneers are in!!!!!!!
Tsarg

Have you guys noticed that at least 70% of the top 25 picks at the draft are RB???

Dang, if we get just a few teams to sign up for the league we will end up with a lot of RB's in our teams.

Cheers!!!! smile
Shensenn

WOOT! HELL YEAH! I've been eagerly awaiting this since the end of the last season lol.

The Biggest point scorers on your team are the RB's. They are your most important pick.

Okay? Live draft on a Friday at 1 in the afternoon? I don't think I will be signing up.

And the scoring looks like it was changed too.

Is there a better time? That was a good time for me, but it's still available for change I'm sure.

I'll be at work. Maybe everyone else here can make that though. I can post occasionally but I can't be sure I will even be near a computer at that time.

Just offer another time, I don't mind, I just knew I'd be on lunch so would be sure I was at the computer. I have no problem changing it.

The points are the generic yahoo points, I didn't change anything.

Anyone on the west coast signing up? If so maybe some input from them on times would be good.

I'd love to sign up, but yeah, 1 in the afternoon is a big "at work" no no. Perhaps a Saturday, or an evening?
Shensenn

I'd rather have the auto draft. The live draft is what screwed my baseball team from the get-go. The point system is different too. I don't really mind the point system, I just don't want to end up screwed on the draft because I can't be on.
Tsarg

I dont mind either draft mode. I can be on at 1 pm ET, but if you guys wish to change the time i will try to adapt.

Also an option, I can do the autodraft, It just stinks if you list 5 RB's in your top 10 trying to get a good one, they're all gone, and you end up getting less needed possitions in the early rounds. In a live draft if nothing else it defaults to your rankings.

On the point system what would you prefer? I honestly didn't change them at all. Most systems I've seen seemed similar

3 points for Passing TD
1 point for each 10 Rushing Yards/Receiving Yards
6 Points for each recieving TD
Something like 1 point per 25-50 passing yards

So if you can clarify where your point concerns are I can adjust the scoring system.

I wasn't making a comment about the points to suggest that we needed to change the system, just to make everyone aware that the system is different than before. The changes from last years system will definately effect your picks in a draft. For example, a passing TD last year was six points for the QB and the Receiver. now it is 4? for the QB and 6 for the receiver. That makes QB's a little less important in early rounds. At least IMHO. The points are fine how they are, they just change some strategies a bit.
eboobi

I signed up. I'll take my chances.
Shensenn

RB's were 6 as well I think.. dunno what they are now as I haven't gone back to look since signing up. I thought the autodraft worked like the live one in that everyone got their 1st round pick, then 2nd, etc. based on the pre-ranked list - the only difference was you didn't need to be there to do it. /shrug I just want the GB team anyway which I don't think anyone will care too much about lol.
Tsarg

I want the Bucanneers!!!!!

So ill trade any player you guys get from them.

Cheers!!!! smile
Hashum

Ok, here are the options and you can just tell me which everyone prefers and I'll change it.

Live Draft- Anyone that logs on can select anyone still available, meaning that if you didn't bother to rank LT #1 because you assumed someone else would take him, but you come up at pick #5 and LT is on the board, you can select him instead of whoever you had as your #1 pick.

If you are not present the computer will draft as it would in an Auto-Draft which is according to the yahoo or your preset rankings.

Auto-Draft- The computer drafts for everyone based on their pre-draft rankings not matter what.

I prefer the live draft only because if I had LT #1, LJ #2, Alexander #3, and say Edge #4, and Peyton Manning #5, and Chad Johnson #6. Figuring on getting one of my top 5 in the first round. Now say all 5 happen to get picked I could get stuck drafting a WR in the first round.

Similarly if I have 10 RB's listed as my top 10 to make sure I get a good one in round 1, I may draft RB's in the first 2 or 3 rounds having expected them all to be drafted by that point, and miss out on a QB etc.

I understand that not everyone maybe able to access the internet from work, so I'm open to a weekend or evening draft slot, or even going auto draft if that's what everyone prefers. I'll start a poll in this thread.
Rinna

The Kamikaze Medics are in.....wish them luck, they'll need it. sly wink
Shensenn

I voted auto, but I'm not against a live one as long as we can schedule it for an evening - preferrably between 9-10pm.
Tsarg

I prefer Live ....... anyways i think that even if you are not there then you get the auto way so ........

Cheers!!! smile
Nuri

I don't care which method we use as long as there is an auto feature. I most likely won't have time to do a draft even if held on a week night, so I need something automatic.
Zyre Mercutio

I am very much down for a live draft if it is done in the evening or on the weekend (preferably). Also the end of July seems a couple weeks too early to do a draft as there are a lot of starting skill position jobs still up for grabs during the exhibition games. I would suggest having it no sooner then mid August so at least we have a couple pre-season games in the books.

Oh and I agree that the draft is too early. half the guys we will want to play will be brokedicks two weeks after we draft if we draft that early. I could probably make a 3rd weekend in august draft.

Based on the poll I've set the draft to take place Saturday August 18th, at 7pm CST (assuming it uses local times and I'm in CST).

We could also use at least 1 more team to even things up.

Yeah. I don't know how long I can be on... I am going to a concert that night it appears.
Hashum

Unfortunately I had kid duty and had to miss this myself, however it appears I pretty much got everyone I wanted. I hope everything worked out for everyone else. Only 2 more weeks and we're going live.
Shensenn

I popped in toward the end and didn't really understand what was going on. Had I know I'd have first pick I would have had a different number 1 (Brett forgive me). Overall I was happy with how my roster came out. All I can say is these rookies better perform their butts off this season!
Hashum

If I'd known I'd have had the 3rd pick mine would have been different too lol.

When I looked at the results I have to say the first thing through my mind was "who the hell picked Farve #1?"
Shensenn

Yeah I think it was Rinna who called my pick of Favre over Tomlinson...gutsy lol.
Tsarg

Im happy with my roster, but i would like to acquire as many Buccaneers players as i can, so if any of you have any bucs players that they are willing to trade i will be glad to do so.

I am looking to acquire my halfback Carnell Williams so take a look at my team and tell me which players you have.

Hell i could even trade Jeff Garcia for one of my players big grin

I guess it just goes to show we should keep those guys on our pre-draft rankings just in case. I don't think I'd have picked VY with my second pick either lol.

Yeah well I had to go to a concert... bah! real life.

Yeah I was out watchin Superbad, but I'm deff happy with my draft picks

So ..... anybody wants to trade any bucs player?? Who picked carnell williams??? Michael clayton??? Joey Galloway??? Jeff Garcia???

Anybody take a look at my team and im sure we can work a trade. I dont care if i win or loose i just want to have the bucs.

eboobi

Wait a minute...

You are going to dump potentially primo players to teams that may already be stacked in other areas just to end up with a mediocre, at best, fantasy team made up of the Bucs. I just did the easy thing to get at least a decent second TE. And I was actually thinking of giving McNair to Shen if he wanted him lol.
Shensenn

McNair eh? Might be better than Pennington..besides Chad's eyes are too close together... cool

Thats the idea.

Anyways, sent Chain Reaction and -ONE- trade offers for williams and galloway respectively. You should be happy with what was offered.

As the Comish should I review these trades to be sure that in general all of them were fair in total?

I accepted Lee Evans for Galloway, the trade didn't seem unfair in compairison Lee only had 200 more receiving yards and 1 extra TD, and I figure with a better QB situation Galloway maybe primed for a good year.

But I don't want to make the playing field unfair for other teams.

E-bo, your thoughts?

I don't care if he wants all TB players. That is his choice. I would hate to see one or two teams end up completely stacked because of that. I don't think it is going to happen, but there is always a potential issue. I don't think your trade is going to make that much of an impact. I really only gained a backup TE because I don't gain much on my Team with McNair. Like I said I thought maybe Shen could use him. I don't even want a player from Shen if he wants McNair.
eboobi

Actually. Let me answer your question. As league commissioner you should look over everything that is submitted as trades just to keep up with what is going on. Otherwise we could have a mess. Do I think we have one yet? No. And who knows, the Bucs may light a fire on the world with the arm of Jeff Garcia. He is at least being picked in the pre-draft analysis to ring up 250+ points this season. That would put him on par with all but maybe the top 6-7 QB's.

Galloway may have a break-out season with Garcia. He's got great hands. Is his age going to catch up with him this season or will his seasoning help him get into better position than the defenders?

Steve McNair is listed as slightly better than Chad Pennington Shen. I think between the injury (last season?) and the normal ineffectiveness of a ravens O that the hopes aren't real high for him. But he has more upside the Favre.
Hashum

I do check all the trades individually, but if your trade was a bit in your favor, and my trade was a bit in my favor, as is someone elses, while no trade in and of itself would cause a problem not sure if the three together created an issue.
eboobi

If you want to look at a downside there will be one week he is definately understaffed because of having the majority of his team as the Bucs. He will get creamed on his bye week. That may not end up being an issue if the bucs are putting 40 points on the board every other week. Their team overall doesn't look bad this season but I don't think they have that firepower.

I think everyone else will balance out on the trades. So you have one team understaffed by choice and the rest still look pretty close if you go by the preseason/pregame predictions on output. Although, I looked at some of the players possible output, as gauged by yahoo, and I think they are expecting a lot from some players that are untested in full season starting roles. We won't really know anything until after the first three weeks with injuries and all how the draft worked out.
Tsarg

eboobi wrote:

Yes, that will definitely happen and i am aware of it, However i think i will end up with only 4 bucs players (garcia, galloway, williams and clayton) as well as the defense that i just acquired from the free agency.

I dont think i will feel it too much unless i have bad luck and happen to have the bucs and another team (with players on my team) to have the byw week at the same time.

eboobi wrote:

Yeah, im pretty sure they dont have that firepower this year unless Clayton and Boston have a HUGE season receiving and williams has a much better season than last year. The problem i see this year is the OL which has shown to be unable to push forward so that the HB can actually gain some yardage.

eboobi wrote:

Yes after seing all the teams they look pretty balanced to me, even after the trades im offering you guys. Hey, im in this for fun im not in this to win, that is why i am having the best players from my favourite team playing for me. Call me stupid, call me punk, idiot, call me what you will, but i have high hopes for my team this season and i wish we can get into the playoffs.

Without Vick in Atlanta i think we have a chance this year cool

Cheers!!! smile
Reaction

The trade of Clayton and Garcia for NcNair and Witten is extremely lopsided. Witten is a second tier TE, and McNair is expected to put up mid to upper tier number by everybody, while Garcia and Clayton are expected to be middle of the pack at best...
Tsarg

Saw your trade proposal, but carnell williams who had a not so good year last season (and this season is in doubt tdue to th eoffensive line of the bucs) for tory holt who is a top notch receiver doesnt seem too balanced for me. I could trade you wiliams for santonio holmes woh looks like he is going to have a good year at the WR position (since i thought you needed WR's). If you dont need WR's take a look at my team and maybe we can work something out.

Wasn't expecting the Holt trade to go through, just wanted you to know what I needed...I'll see what I can do. Is Holt available in a possible package?
Tsarg

Well i think the Holt trade depends on wether i get Galloway and Clayton or not. If i get them both i will be using them as starting WR's and i will only have one free spot for starting WR which could be easily filled with wither steve smith or lee evans, or even santonio holmes which as i said is bound to have a good season. I am not worried about WRs since i think i have a good team on that.

So maybe we can work out a deal package. Let me check out your team to see if i find something i like.

Dang man, you have few players i could choose from, most of all because you have like 8 RB's in it so that doesnt leave me many options. One thing we could do is make the following trade:

Tory Holt (WR) + Randy McMichael (TE)

in exchange for

Carnell Williams (RB) + Antonio Gates (TE)

That way you would get free of one of your many RB's and you would get one of the best WR in the game today (which you need desperately) and would be trading one of the best TE in the game for another.

I think the trade would be pretty balancedor i might even be getting the short end but just by a slight margin (the difference in fan points would be 20 points in your favour), but i would like to hear some opinions from the guys.

Cheers!!! smile
Reaction

McMicheal was an upper tier TE two years ago, now has middle tier fantasy value on a good week, especially in a St. Louis offense that features Holt, Stephen Jackson and Isaac Bruce.

Ok, hit me up with a counter offer that doesnt include any RB other than Williams big grin big grin big grin

Shensenn

If its a WR you need I'd give ya Toomer for Jackson, but I can't trade up a Packer#1 and definitely not their star receiver (Driver) for an unproven RB. I just want the guy cause he's GB - he may turn out to be stellar and he may do zip on an offense stacked with targets for Favre's arm.
Tsarg

Exactly my point. I wont give a 1st tier WR like Holt just for a RB, even if that RB is williams.

I offered deime that trade cause i saw an option to balance the high value of Holt with his TE and i would give him a TE too so he wasnt left with only RB's on his team.

Cheers!!! smile
Reaction

RB's are always valued higher then WR's being that they are a more consistent source of points. With Holt, I have 3 RB's on my roster I would take before him in a draft, especially with the league not getting points for receptions.

I am in no rush to make a move, but I am looking for an upper tier WR for one of my RB. Anyone interested make me an offer.
Shensenn

Reaction wrote:

I agree and if it was an established RB - even a mediocre one I could see trading an upper tier WR, but given this is an unproven RB that may not even see that many plays per game I just can't see doing it...not for Jackson anyway and as I said, I just wanted him cause he's GB.

Points and strategy aside I just can't get rid of a Packer for another one. I need the whole pack lol.

Oh no, that was a general statement, Shen, not a shot at you or Tsarg. Just explaining where some of my mentality is coming from.
Tsarg

Well looks like im gonna watch cadillac williams playing the whole season for Chain Reaction, i just wondere how the hell are you gonna fit your 7 RBs in the game when you can actually have only 2 as starters. And just as a heads up WRs are three spots on the starting lineup ........ do the math..... you only have 4 of them so you better start striking some deals with someone or start getting low end WRs from the free agents tofill your spots ...... /shrug

Shensenn

Compared to Brandon Jackson, Toomer is a top tier WR lol.

Update - Michael Vick suspended indefinitely without pay. I know no one took him but just wanted to throw that out there.

The Madden Curse: Is it real?
Michael Fabiano By Michael Fabiano
Fantasy Editor

The entire world of fantasy football watched with bated breath in the offseason as it was announced which athlete would be on the cover of the Madden 2008 video game. After all, the now infamous curse that seems have haunted players on the past six covers has become the most prominent jinx in all of sports -- it now appears to be even more potent than the Sports Illustrated cover curse. While some consider a jinx or a hex to be foolish, even those who aren't superstitious can't dispute the fact that whoever has donned the cover has suffered a serious injury or a decrease in statistical success.

Before we discuss how the curse could affect the value of this season's cover athlete, Vince Young, let's first take a look at what this so-called hex has done to past athletes. Keep in mind that all the information below is factual.

Garrison Hearst (1999): Hearst was the first athlete to ever be seen on a Madden cover -- John Madden was on the cover in previous seasons. The veteran rushed for a career-best 1,570 yards and seven touchdowns in the 1998 regular season, but Hearst would sustain a serious ankle ailment in a postseason loss to the Atlanta Falcons and was not able to return to action until 2001.

Barry Sanders (2000): Sanders rushed for 1,491 yards in 1998 and was scheduled to be on the cover in 2000, but the Hall of Fame runner decided to retire before the start of the season. Dorsey Levens, who rushed for an impressive 1,034 yards and scored 10 total touchdowns in 1999, would replace Sanders in some versions of the cover. Levens went on to rush for a mere 224 yards and three touchdowns in 2000 and had a combined 1,183 rushing yards between Green Bay, Philadelphia and the New York Giants over what were the final four seasons of his career.

Eddie George (2001): George avoided the Madden curse in 2000 -- he recorded career bests in both rushing yards (1,509) and total touchdowns (16) -- but it would victimize him in 2001. He had what was a career-low 939 rushing yards with five scores that season and would average a mediocre 876 yards in his final three seasons -- he averaged 1,375 yards in his first five seasons.

Daunte Culpepper (2002): Culpepper earned an appearance on the cover after a 2000 season that saw him record 3,937 passing yards, 470 rushing yards and 40 total touchdowns, but the curse struck him down in 2001. He would miss the final five weeks due to an injured knee and finished that season with 2,612 passing yards, 416 rushing yards and 19 total touchdowns.

The Madden Curse struck down Daunte Culpepper in 2002, and then again in 2005.

Marshall Faulk (2003): A surefire future Hall of Famer, Faulk was a statistical machine before he donned the 2003 cover. An injured ankle cost him two contests in 2002, and he failed to rush for 1,000 yards for the first time since 1996. Faulk would never again reach the 1,000-yard mark in his career, and his numbers declined in each season after his appearance on the Madden cover.

Michael Vick (2004): Even a versatile athlete like Vick couldn't elude the curse, as he sustained a broken right fibula in a preseason game versus the Baltimore Ravens and was forced to miss the first 11 contests of the regular season due to the ailment. He was able to make five starts late in the season, but Vick finished with just 585 passing yards, 255 rushing yards and five touchdowns.

Ray Lewis (2005): Lewis was the first (and only to this point) defensive athlete to be featured on the cover, but he fell victim to the curse nonetheless. The All-Pro linebacker missed one start in 2004 due to a broken wrist and failed to record an interception for the first time in his career (he had a career-best six interceptions in 2003). He also missed 10 starts due to injuries in 2005.

Donovan McNabb (2006): McNabb led the Eagles to an appearance in Super Bowl XXXIX and was on the cover of the 2006 version. He sustained a sports hernia in the first week of the 2005 season and attempted to continue on despite the ailment, but he would bow out after nine starts. The curse also seemed to strike him in 2006, as McNabb missed six weeks with an injured knee.

Shaun Alexander (2007): Alexander had one of the best statistical seasons ever in 2005, as he rushed for 1,880 yards and scored what was a record 28 total touchdowns. Alexander, who had missed one start in his previous 64 contests, sustained an injured foot after he was on the cover last season. He missed six starts and failed to rush for 1,000 yards for the first time since 2000.

Vince Young (2008): TBD

The question now is simple: What can we conclude from these unbelievable facts, and is Young destined to suffer some sort of ailment that will cost him at least a portion of the 2007 season?

Well, outside of those that have an audience with the ultimate prognosticator, Nostradamus, no one will know until (and if) it happens. But one thing is certain: This curse does hold some water. In fact, reports indicate LaDainian Tomlinson passed on the chance to be on the cover this season.

Young and his agent, Major Adams, have both dispelled the curse. In fact, Adams even noted that his client won a national championship for the University of Texas in the Rose Bowl after an appearance on the cover of Sports Illustrated. But owners who heeded the Madden curse and passed on McNabb and Alexander over the past two seasons saved their chance at a league title.

While the lone athlete to avoid the curse in the season he was on the cover was George, who was also a member of the Tennessee Titans, the past three quarterbacks (McNabb, Vick, Culpepper) to fall victim all possessed similar skill sets to those of Young as talented passers and runners. While that could be little more than a mere coincidence, it is still a notable piece of information.

Young has the abilities to make an immense statistical impact in his second season, and he will be without question one of the 10 most attractive quarterbacks in all drafts, curse or no curse. While he won't have more draft value than the likes of Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, Carson Palmer, Marc Bulger, Tom Brady or McNabb, Young's stock is similar to that of Matt Hasselbeck and Philip Rivers. That will make him well worth a fourth- to sixth-round selection in all formats.

The ultimate decision on whether or not to choose Young based on the aforementioned facts about the Madden cover curse is up to each individual owner. However, it will be difficult to overlook a quarterback like Young, who has the potential to record 2,300-2,500 passing yards, 500-700 rushing yards and 20-25 total touchdowns, if he falls in drafts over pure superstition.

Those fantasy football owners who do reject the curse and take Young as their No. 1 quarterback would still be wise to add a solid signal-caller like Philip Rivers, Eli Manning, Brett Favre or Jake Delhomme as insurance and a potential sleeper like J.P. Losman or Jason Campbell late as a third option.

It might not hurt to bring a rabbit's foot to the draft, either.
Hashum

I picked Young, and while this year will likely be his most difficult year I have little doubt the curse will have no impact on that. He's never really been injured, even in College ball. Plus he lead my team to the playoffs last year after I picked him up, so got to go with VY.

Just a heads up to check your team once in a while. I have a couple of trade proposals just get rejected based on the fact that the owners I sent them to hadn't checked their page in over 10 days...

Hmmm ....... i check it almostdaily, soi guess one of those trade proposals was not for me.

Cheers!!! smile

Alright, folks. Big additions to the trading block -

Alexander is now on the block. Get me a good WR or a pretty good package, and he is yours. I am obviously set at RB (expecially after the Jackson for Barber trade and the re-emergence of Lamont Jordan). I am looking for a consistent scoring WR in the upper echelon of talent. Alexander is a top 5 back every week he plays.

Let me know.
