Conan question

Hey I have a Conan book series question. I purchased what I thought was the first Conan book but it is more of a collection of short stories but it may very well be the first one. However I was hoping I might be wrong.

Dose anyone know the first book? I am trying to research the Conan world so I will not be ignorant when I rp. Also the books that follows would be helpful.

So far I've been really enjoying it.

Plan on purchasing book two and three in the future, so I can get a good lore base of what I want to RP as.

Yeah I have the same book. I read the first few short stories but got to thinking that it might not have to do with the main story.

It's basically "local boy makes good". The fun part is figuring out where Howard got each story element. "Hyborea" comes from "Hyperborea", for instance. Look it up.

You want to find the background for Conan? It is a mixture of myth, history and anthropology of the ancient eastern Mediterranean as understood in the 1930's ... with a dash of whimsy and a preference for cushy females. That's the same period in which Hollywood gave us Tana leaves, white streaks in the hair, Bela Lugosi, the wolfman, Boris Karloff and the mysterious and magical Near East.

By the way, the Conan stories were first published as short stories in the pulps. They were later collected into the three books. The ones in my parents' collection were published in the 1950's.

Well when I first set out to read the stories I was expecting it to start off with him as a kid (not just because of the movie but because there is a giant gap between that and how he became a king)

I have to admit he caught my interest quickly. I was expecting a wordy book that dove deep into matters that were unimportant to the overall story. I was very much so wrong. Not only is the book as brutal as I could ever hope for it is also something I can down without a flinch. At the very beginning chapters of the book it explains how his face is covered with his enemies brains. That right there got me hooked just because he wrote a true barbarian not another knight in shining armor. If anything he should still be trying to get the blood stains from the last giant he just slew.

I very much so enjoy the short stories so far. I can not wait to get a chance to sit down and read it. Recently all I have time for is 30 minutes to read then I am off to do something. So far the story gets a 10 out of 10.

Jam, when you finish there, there are plenty of Conan comic books that don't rehash the short stories & novels. The newest series has a strong following. I've only glanced at the book, but it's a popular one with comic buyers.
