The room was cold with a dampness in the air.
Cylestya woke up thinking, “Goodness... I did not realize how much he did around here.” She rubbed her shoulders as a shiver went down her spine. She threw the covers aside and walked over to the firewood picking up a few pieces. Letting out a small sigh, she started to walk back to the fireplace he had built her. It was just the way she asked him to do it. The small mantle with the little crystals sitting on it and a few candles for accent and the painting they had gotten from a dear friend the day they were married. When the candles were lit it made it glow as if it were real. The hand crafted fire inlet with the screen around it that was placed in the wall and pushed back ever so slightly to recess in the wall as not to take up much room. She looked over at the screen he had made from a master armor smith. It’s rouged iron with little jewels in it that flickered when the fire was going that set almost like a magic glow around the room. It was the most romantic gesture he did for her.
She took the screen and placed it aside, and looked in at the small pieces of wood as they burned and made popping noises. A grin spread across her face a bit as she placed the pieces of wood in there very tight like he had taught her. “There,” she said, looking at the firewood placing proudly. “He would be proud of me… now I hope I did that right and this thing does not go out,” she said, as she let out a small breath of air. She sat back on the end of the bed, grabbing the throw. Placing it over her shoulders, she rubbed her arms, trying to warm up a bit.
As she stared into the flames, watching them sway from side to side and flicker, she smiled slightly as an image of him and their love came into view. “We were so happy and so full of love then,” she thought, lost in the flames and the memory. As she placed her hand on her head and shook it a bit, her smile began to fade quickly as she slipped back into reality and became aware of the cold and empty spot next to her on the bed. She did not want to think of that day or even of what had happened. She would still keep hope alive, she must!
She started to feel warm now. As she layed down on the end of the bed watching the fire flicker, her thoughts of him drifted from memory to memory.“Why did he have to leave me,” she thought, “why did he have to go? Will I ever feel the warmth of his touch, or the loving things he would always say in that special way we only knew?” As she let out a small sigh, a single tear ran down her cheek. She wiped it away with her hand sniffling a bit then stared back into the flames, her eyes began to get heavy, she finally drifted off to sleep. _________________
