It's time to turn the spotlight on the Man Himself: Trev!!

I. The Basics
Real life first name: Mike
GC Forum handle: Trev (ex-Shensen),mousegear
Main Character name: Garevick Trev
Secondary/other Character name(s): Onur Erathi
Guild: None yet
Where in the real life world do you live? Pennsylvania
What type of work do you do?
I work in a small IT department for a relatively large company...which means I pretty much do a bit of everything.
What other hobbies or activities do you take part in, other then playing Star Wars: Galaxies? Trolling the forums, spending time with the family, and I play in a few pool leagues.
How long have you played Star Wars: Galaxies?
More or less since launch. I've taken several mini-breaks but yeah it's looking more and more like despite what I say in my froth-at-the-mouth moments, I'll probably be a lifer.
How long is your typical gaming session when playing Star Wars: Galaxies?
Usually 2-3 hours a night...it really depends on what 'The Boss' has planned (my wife, not Springsteen).
What does a typical Star Wars: Galaxies day consist of for you?
Since restarting with a brand new character most of my time now is spent questing and just trying to stay steady in gaining levels. With my old toon Shensen the time was mostly spent loot whoring, PvPing, reading through a zillion emails, and of course RP.
II. Your Main Character
What is your highest character level in Star Wars: Galaxies?
Trev is currently 23, but I'm sure by the time this is posted that will have changed dramatically. My toons before my restart were CL90 along with an Ithorian crafter.
How did you choose your main character's name?
I made up the name back when I was playing the original EQ. At the time I was playing a Cleric and thought the surname "De Bloodletter" was fitting given medieval medical practices. Later when I started playing Dark Ages of Camelot I rolled an Infiltrator (rogue) and kept the name - again feeling that it "fit". I've stuck with the name ever since through several other MMO's.
What race and profession is your main character?
Trev is a human gainfully employed by the Empire in their intelligence division. *wink*
What do you like the most about the profession you have chosen for your main character? Hmm. I think what I like most is that it isn't jedi, and it seems to be one of the strongest melee templates out there.
What faction is your main character? Imperial
III. Most/Least Favorites
What is your favorite player-owned ship? Why?
Definitely the yacht (I miss it *sniffle*), it was a cool place to chill back in the day when BH's came often and death meant xp/skill loss. It was also a big help having the extra storage space without using up lots.
What is your favorite ground vehicle? Why?
The AT-RT because it's the closest thing so far to the AT-ST. The game has a nice assortment of travel vehicles, but just not enough cool ones. I'd love to see them enable vehicular weapons - that would rock.
What is your favorite expansion? Why?
JTL. To me at the time it was the final missing piece of what the game was missing in order to truly be called Star Wars. I've never been a huge space fan, but I think it was by far the best, most thought-out and well done expansion released to date.
What is your favorite planet? Why?
Talus. It's where I did most of my early grinding and it was also where my first guild (RD) had the epic battles we all wish for now, with our arch rivals (OA). It was generally just the best time period of the game for me. Everything was new, everyone was still discovering new things, no one had mastered two elite professions yet, there were no master Doctors, everyone was a noob.
Who is your favorite npc? Why?
Vader. I remember the very first time I started the Emperor's retreat quests. It seemed like the missions were taking forever (remember back then many of the missions were buggy and the NPCs were tough), but I finally got to head deeper into the place and I'll never forget hearing Vaders breathing before I could even see him. It gave me chills. Then he choked me during another encounter in Coronet
Which expansion do you like the least? Why?
Trials of Obi Wan. I have mixed feelings about it because I liked that the quests were a bit harder and some couldn't be solo'd, but on the other hand it was long and boring as hell riding from one end of the planet to the other. I was hoping it would be more along the lines of multi-group raiding content.
Which planet do you like the least? Why?
Tattooine/Lok - Desert=boring terrain...sandstorms make me chaffe.
What was your favorite Star Wars movie? Why?
RoTS. This was the defining moment I'd been waiting for and by far the best display of Empire butt kicking in general. The questions were answered and I found myself feeling sorry for Vader, but understanding why he did what he did. I would certainly do the same thing if I thought it would save my loved ones. It made me see Vader not as "The bad guy", but as a man who essentially sold his soul for love, which made the ending of RotJ all the better.
Who was your favorite character? Why?
It has always been Vader, but even moreso now. To me he is one of the most complex characters in the series, with Han Solo coming in a close second with the most mysterious award.
Who was your least favorite character? Why?
Anyone who answers this with anything other than Jar Jar Binks should have their head checked. He was a poor addition to an already poor casting. Yeah I know, he had kid appeal (You're a genius George! Lets do lunch! Call me!), but damn I hated him.
What are the most credits you have ever spent on purchasing a single item for one of your characters?
45 million for a lance recently. I was told by the previous owner that she bought it pre-cu for 5k lol.
Do you have an item you no longer use but keep around for nostalgic reasons? If so, what is it and why do you keep it?
I have nothing now, but I used to have a ton of stuff. I think the most prized of my collection were the old CH pets and Aurilia Camp rewards.
Describe your favorite period of Star Wars: Galaxies (Pre-CU, CU, NGE, etc.) and what you liked the most about it.
I liked them all and can't really pick just one. Pre-CU was a time of discovery and growth, CU was the best time for profession templates (as a Jedi at least), spin groups were fun too, NGE pissed me off to no end for a long time, but I will say that I like it simply because this is the era of "real" to me. Real quests with thought out story lines that don't take an entire year to finish, the quests work (so far anyway), and combat is more balanced now.
The experise professions have added back a level of personal customization that we lost with the CU, but they actually thought about the results this time around and I would feel comfortable playing any profession and feeling like an equal on the battlefield.
IV. Roleplay and MMO’s
What game brought you to Role Playing (RP)? SWG the most, but I've roleplayed in every MMO since EQ.
Have you played tabletop RP games before moving to MMO’S? If so, which ones?
My friends and I used to play D&D and a few other tabletops - that is really what got me hooked on roleplaying. I guess technically though we all probably roleplayed from a young age starting with 'Cops and Robbers', 'Cowboys and Indians', etc.
What other MMOs have you played? EQ, EQ2, Asheron's Call, Dark Age of Camelot, City of Heroes, The Matrix Online, Guild Wars, Silk Road, World of Warcraft.
What do you get out of playing Star Wars: Galaxies?
I just love the setting. I love the look, the sounds, the scenery (least fav planet not included), and the gameplay. Nothing beats Star Wars in terms of Sci-Fi, and say what you will, there's no other game out there like it.
How did you get into Roleplaying?
I stopped by a friend's house one day and he and a bunch of other guys were playing this wierd game with paper and pencil (looked like school to me). I watched for awhile and caught on to what was happening and got emotionally vested in the fate of my friends during their perilous journey. Afterwards they showed me the character sheets and before I knew it I was reading the DM Guide and rolling a toon for the next time.
How would you “sell” roleplaying to someone that has never tried it before? What are the benefits?
It is an extension of yourself that allows you to take the Star Wars experience to the next level. It is an expansion of dynamic content that no game maker can ever release. It’s something you can completely immerse yourself in 24/7 or just when you get bored and want something different to do. Ideally I’d rather sell it by just doing it and getting them involved…it usually ends up selling itself once it is given a chance.
What was your favorite event or story arc?
Shensen’s betrayal. I got to work with a lot of great people on what turned out to be a great arc with ripples that still effect aspects of the community to this day. Along with that I would also mention the replicant arc. I wasn’t overly involved with this arc, but I found it absolutely fascinating how human nature manifested itself during that one. The mistrust and deceit was absolutely heart warming (my heart anyway).
How long have you been an RP’er?
Probably since I was fourteen or so.
What do you like best about RP’ing?
Choosing paths I probably wouldn’t choose for myself in real life. It is probably the easiest to play your character to your own personality, but I find it nice to take advantage of the fact that this isn’t real and play to personality types that would land me in dire trouble if it were.
What type of RP ‘role’ do you prefer portraying with your character?
I prefer what most would call “The bad guy”, but I view it more as an individual with a different opinion, who believes whole-heartedly in his vision, and will do whatever it takes to get what he wants. I like playing personable characters that you could almost get to like, but they have certain quirks that just don’t mesh well with the norm. I’ve played just about every character type I could think of and enjoyed them all. Each of them has something special to offer.
What kind of RP story arc would you most like to be a part of?
I like deep plots that take time to develop. To me there’s nothing more satisfying than to make a plan, start pulling strings and making things happen and then at some point someone figures out it was you and everyone else is like “Damn!”. The fun after that is great too. Ultimately if everyone had a good time then that is the best story arc I could hope to be a part of.
What would you like to see more of when doing RP?
Common sense. Over the last year the community has made great strides in documenting guidelines, which make great reference tools. Most of us have been around long enough to know what is acceptable and what isn’t, yet if people just used some common sense we wouldn’t need to have so much discussion about already over-discussed topics.
Which other community member do you like to RP with the most? Why?
Tough one, but definitely Hashum. He has a great imagination and flare for the dramatic. More importantly he is extremely flexible and recognizes that really good RP between “good” and “evil” forces require give and take. I guess he’s a very realistic and uncomplicated person to RP with. He plays a strong character, but doesn’t always have to overpower; an intelligent character, but he doesn’t talk so many circles my head hurts.
I’ve enjoyed RPing with everyone else too!
Do you have any ideas for future RP story arcs that you would share?
None that I would share.
Describe your best RP experience from playing Star Wars: Galaxies?
I really can’t pick a favorite. All of the experiences were fun. Whether I was trying to subvertly take over the known galaxy, possessed by dead people, or drunk and streaking, it was all fun to play and each instance allowed me to meet and RP with someone I may not have before.
If you could give a new player one bit of advice based on your game experiences, what would it be?
Assuming we’re still talking about RP, I would say take your time in developing your character and his background. Once that is done just become your character, look through his eyes, and for a few hours a day you can live your own Star Wars saga. On another note, I also recommend journaling. It’s an easy way to keep track of names, info you gather and summaries of your encounters for future reference. |
