Childhood's End was something wonderful! And The City and the Stars shaped expectations of the furture for two generations of my family.

Beat ya to it, Drew. One thread down. 
And, aye, Clarke was a big loss. I've no doubt Roddenberry, like many sci-fi writers, learned much from his works; in this case with the seeds Roddenberry would turn into Star Trek.
